Political correctness is supposedly a good thing, yet no one feels good being politically correct. It is even worse when governments start forcing you to be politically correct, and to change how you live, and your country’s values. Many citizens feel downright insulted when the changes are being crammed down their throats to accommodate people who will not show the same thoughtfulness, or appreciation.

Enter Australia, where the locals are restless and the center of the firestorm is assimilation of Muslims, or the lack thereof. In a recent decision, a local council banned longtime Jewish residents of the iconic Bondi suburb of Sydney from building a synagogue. The reason given for the ban: not wanting to offend radical Islamic terrorists.

Bondi is a beautiful suburb of Sydney, and they do not want to have to put up barriers to guard against terrorists.

Jewish rabbis wanted to build a synagogue on Wellington St in Bondi, which is only a a few hundred meters from Australia’s visited, and famous beach. The Australians feared the religious worship site would be too much of a security risk for those attending and the local residents.

The Jewish leaders are understandably upset by this ruling. They rightfully point out that cowing to radicals who are willing to blow up innocent women and children, or attack Christians in the name of Allah, or jihad, will not cause them to alter any plans they may have.

In an even more shocking decision, the Land and Environment Court decided to uphold the cowardly Waverly Council ruling. Even though the nation is still dealing with the emotions of an alleged threat against an airline and how to best secure the island nation, this ruling is an official surrender of the freedom of religion, unless you are Muslim.

Jewish leaders were very vocal in their criticism of this decision, and the message it sends to terrorists willing to attack Australia. Joe Hildebrand of news.com.au reported ‘the local Jewish community said the council and the court had effectively stifled freedom of religion and rewarded terrorism.”

Rabbi Yehoram Ulman was quoted by the paper as saying this is unprecedented and “Its implications are enormous. It basically implies that no Jewish organisation should be allowed to exist in residential areas. It stands to stifle Jewish existence and activity in Sydney and indeed, by creating a precedent, the whole of Australia, and by extension rewarding terrorism.”

The rabbi goes on to say, “It’s a very sad day for Australia if an established community, which needs a house of worship, is refused permission to build it because of fear that others may pose a threat.”

“This simply shows how we’re all losing our freedoms. Those who want us to be afraid are winning, and this ill-conceived judgment represents a dangerous precedent.

It is decisions like this which have a large swath of Australians rejecting Muslim immigrants when polled.

When the research firm Essential did a poll of 1,075 Australians, they found 49% of those polled were in favor of a ban when asked “Would you support or oppose a ban on Muslim immigration to Australia?”

The question was on the minds of the country’s citizens with the rise of One Nation leader Pauline Hanson, who has been an outspoken about the dangers some Muslims pose to the nation.

When the responders gave there reasoning for their views, none of it was due to discrimination, as the media would like to portray. It’s very hard to call almost 50% of your country racist, but the media is not beyond trying.

The top factor for supporting a ban was the belief that Muslims “do not integrate into Australian society.” 40% of the polled Aussies felt this way. This was followed by 27% who believe Muslims are a “terrorist threat” and 22% feeling “they do not share our values.”

The spokesperson for the council which rejected the synagogue noted that not only did the court support their decision, but so did several residents who raised concerns.

“A number of residents agreed with the contentions raised by the Council and provided additional evidence against the development of the site.”

Even if some residents complained, it does not change the fact that millions of Australians have now been informed that their freedom to practice their faith is not equal to that of Muslims. Since there are little, to no threats to those practicing their Muslim faith, they are free to practice anywhere. Australia’s Jewish community do not enjoy the same luxury.

This is a tragic blow for those of any faith outside of Islam. Let’s pray Australia does not have to face radical extremists, because there seems to be a lack of backbone by the country’s judges and officials.
