The situation started just after 11:30 am when two suspects approached the woman´s vehicle and one of them grabbed her by her shirt sleeve.
Memphis Police Department informed the public that three fake police officers pulled a woman over and robbed her at gunpoint in Whitehaven, which clearly represents a delicate situation considering that this is a modus operandi that could get repeated.
Authorities detailed that the incident happened on the Elvis Presley Boulevard just in broad daylight on Monday. Apparently, the imposters disguised as cops drove a Black Dodge Charger and a blue cargo van. It was revealed that both vehicles were equipped with police lights in their front windows.

Authorities explained that the woman tried to reach for her gun in the center console, but another suspect suddenly stopped her and grabbed her Smith and Wesson handgun, $452 in cash, and her wallet.

According to the Memphis Police Department, soon after this action one of the suspects decided to pull the woman out of her car and had her on the ground at gunpoint. Authorities said that while the suspects contemplated the chances of taking the woman’s car, they eventually decided to leave the scene in their vehicles in order to avoid more issues.
The woman told the police that every single suspect was dressed in black baseball caps with “Police” written on it in white letters. Additionally, the men had black t-shirts with the same label in white letters and black cargo pants. Apparently, the suspects also had badges and full gun belts.
The Memphis Police Department said that citizens should double-check to make sure the lights in the car trying to pull you over are white and blue, since it is almost impossible that these kinds of criminal use it in their criminal acts. Additionally, the department said citizens should be sure to pull over in heavily populated areas in order to prevent this kind of situation. So far, no arrest has been made.

According to Forbes, Memphis is included in the top 20 of the most dangerous cities in America, given the fact that while having a population of 652,725 people, its violent crime rate is 1,583 per 100,000 residents.
Lamentably, this terrible reality has got worse, since newly released statistics revealed that major violent crimes and major property crimes rose in the city in the first six months of the year compared to 2016.
Given this concerning issue, Police Director Michael Rallings and Memphis Democratic Mayor Jim Strickland released statements where they called the situation as “unacceptable.” Rallings said that the numbers are quite upsetting to him and to the citizens, considering that being safe must be a number one priority. In addition, he said that the police department is taking actions including the recruitment of more police officers and the launch of the Violent Crimes Unit in January of this year.

Regarding this numbers, Rallings didn’t had anything else to say that people need to take basic precautions. Basically, he somehow acknowledged that citizens in Memphis are on their own. Furthermore, he told that people need to be more responsible since authorities have been noticing a lot of cases where individuals leave their vehicles unlocked with the keys inside.

However, in a separate statement, Rallings told that the police department had received almost 3,500 aggravated assault reports to date. A third of them were related to domestic violence.
