The reason behind his tour ending is up for debate with the insurance company.

Kanye West has always been a colorful media fixture. He is known for his sometimes over the top antics and impulsive nature. Few can forget the long standing beef with teen idol Taylor Swift, including West overtaking her award acceptance speech a few years back. He is used to grabbing attention any way he can.

His sporadic behavior can sometimes get him into trouble, as is the case back in November when his rants turned audiences sour. While on tour in California, West started in on a political rant that appeared to be a temper tantrum of sorts. The audience reacted harshly as he screamed political opinions and walked off after only doing a few songs. It seemed even his fans were growing tired of him.

Was West's newest outburst nothing out of the ordinary for him?

Was West’s newest outburst nothing out of the ordinary for him?

Right after the issues with that fateful concert in Sacramento, the rumors about West using drugs started to resurface. There were also rumors that ticket sales were dropping after the tirade on stage. When word got out that West was not going to continue the tour, rumors also came out concerning West losing money if he stayed on tour.

According to a report about the tour:

“West canceled his touring plans in November and checked into UCLA Neuropsychiatric Hospital Center, where he spent eight days. He pulled the plug after concerts in San Jose, where he told fans he would’ve voted for Donald Trump, and Sacramento, where he ranted about Jay Z and BeyoncĂ©. He performed three songs in Sacramento before storming off stage.

His company, Very Good Touring, had insurance covering the tour’s cancellation and non-appearance fees, according to the suit. Two days after West canceled the tour, Very Good Touring filed a claim.

Nine months later, Lloyd’s hasn’t paid anything, the lawsuit says. The suit alleges that Lloyd’s is trying to blame marijuana use for West’s breakdown, and is looking for “any ostensible excuse no matter how fanciful” to deny payment.”

Rumors of drug use, mental health issues and even a failed fan base came out as the tour was cancelled.

Rumors of drug use, mental health issues, and even a failed fan base came out as the tour was canceled.

Very Good Touring asked for the $10 million payout from Llyod’s of London tied to insurance they had if West needed to cancel shows. It seems that is this case; West stands to make a profit for not touring. If there were issues with ticket sales dropping after two questionable shows and on-stage behaviors that seemed to be getting worse, is it possible that this profit could be more than a failed tour?

While his management company points to him being exhausted and overwhelmed, it does not appear that Lloyd’s is buying it. They have tried to prove he was, in fact, using drugs and this might explain his odd behavior. Whether it was a lack of sleep or drugs, it seems neither side is arguing he holds any blame as far as owning his behavior.

An interesting part of the case is first tied to the fact that if this was a medical emergency and not something planned that West’s company was very quick to file suit after the initial cancellation of the shows. There did not seem to be any lag between this alleged medical crisis and the two short days they waited to file an insurance claim. West was still in the hospital as the application was submitted.

West has been waiting now a total of 9 months for the insurance payout. He has filed suit to ask the court to force the payout. He is also contending that the insurance company has leaked private medical records tied to their allegations of drug use on the part of West.

At various times there have been rumors about his drug use and also issues with mental instability. He is known for his unusual antics and in many cases uses this as a way to make money. It seems suspect that now after they insured the tour that Lloyds is suddenly crying foul over possible drug use. It would be hard to argue that they were not aware of the possible issues tied to his odd behaviors and even on some level knew the potential liabilities attached to insuring his tour.

Was the current insurance claim used to help a troubled West recover from a mental health issue? Some might argue that West was brilliant in making a claim to protect himself from losing money if the fans did not support the rest of the dates after the two odd California shows.
