Teenagers believe they’re invincible. Everyone remembers doing stuff when they were young that is hair raisingly scary now that time and age has stamped its wisdom into their brains. So, it can be shocking to see the exploits of today’s youth, especially considering how society has changed and become more dangerous than it was 10 years ago, engage in dramatic stunts.

However, some things never change. A 17-year-old boy on board Copa Airlines flight 208 from Panama City astounded passengers and other witnesses when he opened the emergency door and exited the plane moments after it touched down on the tarmac.

The emergency exits on a plane are intended for evacuations. They open near the wings so that, if necessary, passengers have an alternate escape option.

The plane was landing in San Francisco when the U.S. citizen apparently decided to execute some moves like Spiderman or reenact a scene from “Reefer Madness.” He leaped out the door and slid down the wing of the passenger plane like a stunt man.

Witnesses told reporters that everyone couldn’t believe their eyes and were dumbfounded by the teen’s behavior. Sophia Gibson, a passenger on the flight, said, “It was as if he was flying out, like it was really fast.”

While the plane was on the tarmac in San Francisco, for unknown reasons the boy opened the emergency door and fled.

Everyone on the flight was confused and started yelling, according to another witness. 11-year-old Andrea Sepulveda Guzman said she saw the “guy” jump out onto the wing, then climb down it, and then take off on foot.

Initially, no one knew why the young man exited the aircraft in this unorthodox manner. Copa Airlines stated that it is a federal violation to open one of the emergency doors without having been specifically instructed to do so by one of the crew.

Apparently, the boy was sitting in the row that features the alternate exit, but the airline stated that flight attendants followed aviation guidelines that stipulate passengers in that row be at least 15 years old.

Federal prosecutors in San Francisco did not respond to questions about whether the reckless teen would face any charges for his conduct.

After jumping from the aircraft and doing his superhero routine, the young man was held by a construction crew working at the airfield until authorities arrived and took him into custody. He was arrested by police at the scene.

It's against the law to open an emergency door without authorization, but the boy is being treated at a mental hospital and won't face charges for his daring deed.

Many of the passengers said that the teen had opened the door and was on the ground running before they even knew what had happened. Others verified that the boy seemed restless and fidgety on the seven-hour flight.

However, flight attendants acted quickly as soon as the door was opened. They followed security and safety procedures outlined by the airline and aviation officials.

Passenger Matt Crowder was sitting near the row and saw the boy open the door. He shouted when the teen jumped onto the wing, and he heard the crew yelling to each other, “The door’s open. Someone jumped off.”

Isaac Rodrigues, also travelling from Panama, told reporters that he saw a flight attendant use her body to block the hole where the removable exit door had been. He explained that the plane remained on the runway for about an hour, but authorities confirmed that no other flights or schedules were influenced by the teen’s bizarre behavior.

Officials say that no other flights were disrupted by the 17-year-old boy's behavior, but the plane did wait for an hour on the tarmac.

An investigation has been opened into the incident. City police Officer Grace Gatpandan told reporters yesterday that the boy was sent for treatment and will not be charged by local authorities. All indications seem to point to some mental or severe emotional distress.

The teen was traveling alone on the flight. He has been transferred to a mental health facility, but his name has not been released by authorities. No other information is known, but hopefully the young man will be treated and released.

The daring act may have been a stunt, but there are still many questions surrounding the event. Why was the teen coming from Panama City alone? Did anything else occur on the flight to precipitate the odd behavior?

Regardless of the outcome, it’s truly amazing what this kid did. Jumping from a plane onto the tarmac like that is extremely dangerous, but this boy performed the feat like an action hero. Fortunately, no one was injured.
