Women don’t like secrets. Once they are on the trail of something fishy, they relentlessly pursue it to the end. A strange freezer in the basement with a padlock is the kind of mystery no self-respecting female can ignore. After a month went by, Jill Eshenbaugh nagged her husband Ken to cut the lock. The find justified her determined curiosity. Stuffed into three separate bags was what seemed to be a person. The Eshenbaugh’s called police.

A few weeks ago, Arturo Novoa, an acquaintance Ken and Jill had known about five years, asked if he could store the freezer at their home because his power would be out. He didn’t want “his freezer full of meat to spoil,” the complaint said. One source describes the couple as “Novoa’s landlord.” That did not seem like an unreasonable request so they gave the okay and he brought it on over.

31-year-old Novoa, who also goes by Anthony Gonzalez, was already on police radar. His girlfriend, Shannon Graves had been missing since sometime in February. Neighbor Terry Bucklew says “I’d wake up — 2, 3 in the morning — cops shining lights in the windows.”

Shannon had been reported missing by her sister, Debbie Depaul, in June. It was not unusual for Shannon to be out of touch for extended times. Addicted to heroin and other drugs, 29-year-old Graves distanced herself from family but “she had never gone this long without speaking to anyone.”

According to missing posters, Shannon was last seen by friends at a party where she was “arguing with a male friend. Shannon called an ex-boyfriend who didn’t answer. Ex says he didn’t receive message until later & then couldn’t get in touch with her. No one has seen Shannon since.” That was the 24th of February. Since then she missed contacting the family at Easter, Father’s day, even her birthday.

Authorities describe Novoa as Shannon’s “live-in boyfriend.” He continued living in her “place,” an apartment on the west side of Youngstown. He was not lonely there for long.

According to Dana Lantz, Prosecutor for the City of Youngstown, Katrina Layton, 34, was arrested along with Novoa after the body was found in the freezer. Katrina moved in to Shannon’s apartment and literally took her place roughly the time Graves disappeared, the end of February. “The apartment on Mahoning Avenue, the lease is in the name of…what we believe to be the victim, Shannon Graves,” Prosecutor Lantz told the Judge. She also drove Shannon’s car, used her cell phone, bought groceries with her food card and treated Shannon’s dog as if it were her own. “Basically, Miss Layton moved in with Mr. Novoa and started living her life,” said Lantz “She didn’t hold herself out to be Shannon, she just lived her life, using her phone, caring for her dog.” Lantz goes on to add, “She was the new girlfriend and basically took over [Graves’] place in Mr. Novoa’s life.”

Shannon’s friends called her Starr and described her as having a heart of gold, an angel on earth

When Police picked Novoa up for questioning, he told the cops he didn’t know anything about a freezer but the key to the padlock was on his key ring. An official determination of the body’s identity remains to be performed but just about everyone is convinced this is the missing Shannon Graves. No murder charges have been filed until the body can be positively identified and a specific cause of death determined. Until then, Novoa and Layton are both charged with abuse of a corpse. Layton was charged with obstruction of justice. Both remain behind bars on bond of a million dollars each.

“Shannon’s friends called her Starr and described her as having a heart of gold, an angel on earth, supportive, outgoing, thoughtful and fun,” her sister says. “Shannon has been missed and will always be missed. You can’t replace a spirit like hers. She is loved by so many.”

Freezers seem to be a popular way to store bodies these days. Florida retiree Allan Dunn was faced with a dilemma. Not only burdened by the loss of his wife Margaret, Allan also faced the loss of her monthly Social Security income. After respectful grief and reflection on his future for about twenty minutes or so, he stashed her body in the freezer and kept quiet.
