The Vernon County Fair in Viroqua, Wisconsin, recently banned vendors from selling the Confederate flag after Mark Kastel, a Wisconsin resident who co-founded of The Cornucopia Institute, a local farm policy research group, complained (pictured above).
The authoritarian left is determined to control as much of our lives as possible. To do so, they manufacture outrage about the most benign things, like the Confederate flag.
For example, last year, a Wisconsin resident petitioned the board of his local fair to ban the sale of Confederate flags at future events, which usually have about 20,000 attendees. Instead of ignoring such a ridiculous demand, fair organizers listened to him and passed a rule prohibiting vendors from selling the flag to attendees.
According to reports, the Confederate flag was recently banned from being sold at the Vernon County Fair in Viroqua, Wisconsin after a triggered snowflake lodged a complaint. John McClelland Jr., the Vice President of the fair’s 11-member board, announced the board’s decision earlier this week.

The Vernon County Fair.
“As a board, we decided [the flag] wasn’t a necessary item,” explained McClelland, who has previously told reporters that he personally thinks of the television show “The Dukes of Hazzard,” and not racism or hate, when he sees the flag. “[The Confederate flag is] a piece of our history, but someone got their feelings hurt. So we decided not to sell it,” he added.
The person who got their feelings hurt was Mark Kastel, a Wisconsin resident who co-founded of The Cornucopia Institute, a local farm policy research group. Last year, he confronted a vendor selling the Confederate flag. The vendor responded by allegedly cursing at him, which made him feel intimidated. As a result, he went to the board of the fair and demanded that they ban vendors from selling the flag.
“I’m asking the board to be conciliatory to everybody in the community. Even if there is one person negatively affected by this, that’s too many,” explained Kastel when asked to provide more information about his complaint to the fair board.
“I just don’t have a lot of sympathy for people who claim that [the Confederate battle flag] is some important part of their heritage,” he continued, noting, “it angers me personally because I consider [the Confederate battle flag to be] a symbol of hate. Family members of mine who were active in the Civil Rights Movement were beaten up in the past.”
Unsurprisingly, many people were outraged over the board’s decision to ban the flag. On Facebook, one person wrote, “what a dam [sic] joke!!! How about teaching our youth not to get butt hurt about every little damn thing and learn some actual history! I can’t believe little Ol Vernon county fair is actually worried about maybe offending a couple people? If you are offended don’t buy one or walk away? Is that hard?”
Another person added, “just bc one person complained are u kidding? 1 out of how many…u can’t please everyone if he doesn’t like it don’t come this year [sic].”
In addition to Vernon County Fair, the 32nd Annual Highland Creek Heritage Festival in Toronto, Canada has also recently come under fire for allowing a car with two Confederate flags to be on display. Earlier this year, a triggered festival goer filmed herself berating the vendor for showing off a “racist car.”
Instead of standing up for free speech, the organizers immediately apologized and suggested that it wouldn’t happen again. On Facebook, Paul Maguire, the head of the street festival’s organizing committee, wrote, “we regret that any person was made to feel unwelcome at our event. It has always been inclusive, with committee support roles open to all who would volunteer their time,” noting, “[we] recognize that symbology can be profoundly evocative. We did not, and would not, choose to present any element that brings to mind one of the ugliest periods of human history.”
Maguire, who promised “greater sensitivity and preparation in the future,” insisted that the committee had no idea Confederate Flags would be on display at the festival. “[The] offending symbol was present without the committee’s foreknowledge,” he explained.
“The committee uniformly decries all actions of hate, past, and present. We committee members individually and collectively undertake that future committees will strive to avoid all representations of hate.” continued Maguire, adding, “hate deserves no place anywhere in our hearts, much less in a family festival. The diverse committee volunteer their time without any thought of personal reward and should not be tainted with unfounded accusations of bias.”
Conservatives must not allow the authoritarian left to control the lives of others. This means pushing back against their attempts to ban things like the Confederate flag. Failing to do this will result in lesser freedom for everyone in the country.
