GOVT PAYING EMPLOYERS TO HIRE UNEMPLOYED S'POREANS A SHORT-TERM SOLUTION THAT WILL HARM SG IN LONG RUN

Singaporean professionals, managers, executives and technicians (PMETs) who have been out of job for 2 years can now apply for a new National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) scheme, which will place them with employers for structured on-the-job training.

The scheme, which is capped at 6 months, will begin a trial period where a training allowance of $2,500 will be paid to successful applicants. $1,000 will be contributed by the employer, while $1,500 will be contributed by Workforce Singapore.

Employers will be offered a bonus of S$3,000 if the returning PMET is hired in a permanent or contract position of at least 12 months, and he or she works for three continuous months after the trial. This bonus will be given to the employer at the nine-month mark after the start of the trial, regardless of when the returning worker was placed, NTUC and Workforce Singapore said.

Singaporeans 30 years old and above, who have a degree or diploma or previous held a PMET role and have been out of work for 2 years or longer, can apply with NTUC U Family at returners@ntuc.org.sg from 1 September onwards.

However, not all netizens were happy with the idea.

"Goh Keng Swee's and the pioneer batch of EDB team had only one single goal - employment for Singaporeans. GDP and other measures are progress markers and not achievements. If he resorted to piecemeal solutions after opening the gates to foreigners, we would not have evolved as a nation," netizen scroobal wrote on a popular local forum. "Now we are so desperate that we are bribing employers to take on Singapore workers. None of this is sustainable. All they do is get plp employers to take up grassroots folks and their friends to hang around and do little."
