Diversity and demands of separation are hot topics right now at the University of Chicago. A band of unidentified students that have taken it upon themselves to create a list of 50 demands that is holding the campus hostage. While it is not clear what will happen if their list of demands is not met, there are protests and rallies taking place already.

It appears the group has taken it upon themselves to speak for all students they see as being marginalized, well maybe not all the students. The focus of these demands does not address gender issues or has anything to do with sexual orientation or the likes. Their focus is clearly on creating a racial division on campus. It is also ironic that the group calls themselves “UChicago United” while pushing for a segregated new reality.

According to the list of demands, it appears that there are members of the group that represents black, Asian, Islanders, Arab and Latin students. The requirements make no mention of addressing safety issues on campus and seems to only address discrimination as far as it is directly related to race as they define them. It is also odd that there is no mention of Native American groups.

For the groups that somehow have decided they are the only ones needing these special protections, the demands were broken down by race. Each of the groups pushed for more faculty from their particular race. This request was not made as an overall hiring of people of color but instead increasing the number of staff in each of the racial groups.

Housing was also another large issue the group made demands about. If they get their way, student housing would be segregated based on ethnicity. While students from outside of this group are okay to live side by side with the full range of students, within each of these protected groups they want to be able to “opt-out” of life with other racial groups. Suddenly they are forcibly creating pockets all over campus that are not open to all students.

Students push to exclude many from their part of campus but force Islam studies.

The list of demands only seems to get odder as they also push for new power as far as fighting against any group or organization accused or guilty of discrimination on campus. While they want the freedom to deny students housing if their outward racial appearance does not match one of their designated groups, they are asking that just the accusation of discrimination against others ends in a loss of funding. It does not seem like there even needs to be a hearing or anything proven, just someone speaking out and saying it occurred. According to their demands:

“…the university will place limits and/or restrictions on the funding allotted to student organizations that are accused and/or found guilty of discriminatory behavior.”

While this may not seem like all that big of a deal, it essentially says we are creating special groups of students that have the power to close down any group they want just by saying they are discriminating. There is nothing written in the policy that even protects groups from false accusations.

The groups pushing this agenda have also asked that the current activities and offices on campus that address diversity be done away with. Instead of addressing the whole student body as the current Center of Identity + Inclusion does, this group is pushing to only focus on race. Current integration efforts attempt to meet the needs of students as their race, sexual orientation, gender, and other factors combine to create their unique needs.

Under the umbrella of building a united campus, this appears to be more of a separatist group instead. They are not asking for work to be done to address the mistreatment of women within some of these ethnic groups; it is assumed anyone of that particular group just goes along with the group consensus. You would be hard pressed, for example, to explain that Arab men have the same experience as Arab women. It also does not make sense to say that anyone should support Arab women being forced to stand behind those same men instead of interacting with a wider range of ethnic groups.

Each of the groups listed as having demands also asks for their particular group to have special considerations as far as academic requirements. If these items were to pass, they could also force students outside of their groups to study each group. This seems horribly inappropriate and odd seeing that each of these areas of study may essentially have little or nothing to do with the overall degrees. Students would be forced to consider Islamic issues instead of focusing on true academic parts of their degrees.

The final and probably oddest demand is the one to create an overwhelming number of racially based student centers on campus. Again, this is another way to keep undesirable students out of certain parts of the campus in the name is diversity. It is unclear how one might access these race-based centers, or how they address things like students who fit into more than one group.

Student diversity does not seem to be the focus of this demanding group. Instead, there is a new level of control on those that look like them and those who do not. The assumption being students could find shelter from anyone looking different from them and cry discrimination if others do the same.
