El Paso Joins The Far Left
El Paso County has partnered with the far left to stop Texas’ ban on sanctuary cities. El Paso County and progressive non-profit group Texas Organizing Project Education Fund (TOPEF) filed a lawsuit in federal court in an attempt to have the anti-sanctuary law declared unconstitutional. The lawsuit claims that the ban on sanctuary cities violates the US and Texas Constitutions, runs counter to federal law, and invites racial profiling.
Senate Bill 4, also known as SB-4, was signed into law by Governor Abbott on May 7. The law, which goes into effect on September 1, makes it a criminal offense for sheriffs, police, or constabulary to ignore immigration detainer requests from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The anti-sanctuary law also allows law enforcement entities who continue to ignore ICE detainers to be fined and removed from office.
Proponents of the law say that it will help relieve the State’s illegal immigration problem and help prevent criminal offenders from returning. Opponents claim that SB-4 is “racist” and unfairly targets people of Mexican and Central American descent.

Leftwing Extremists Claim Anyone Who Eliminates Sanctuary Cities Is Racist
The lawsuit was filed in San Antonio on May 22 against Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Attorney General Ken Paxton, and DPS Director Steve McCraw. Joining El Paso County and TOPEF as Plaintiffs in the lawsuit was El Paso Sheriff Richard Wiles.
TOPEF is a subsidiary of the Texas Organizing Project (TOP). TOP is a non-profit group that has a stated mission of “social and economic equality” to be achieved through “community and electoral organizing”. The TOP website proclaims that the organization has increased minority voter turnout in Harris, Hidalgo, and Dallas Counties. The TOP organization is a successor to the infamous ACORN group, best known for its 2010 bankruptcy amidst numerous members being sentenced to jail and prison for election fraud. TOP’s Founder, Ginny Goldman, was Director of the Texas chapter of ACORN until 2009.

Similar leftist groups, such as the Texas Civil Rights Project (TCRP), have applauded the lawsuit. They believe the anti-sanctuary bill amounts to a “show me your papers” law that will have a chilling effect on legal immigration as well as the lives of people of Latin descent. Other claims of the far-left include the possibility of police using the new law as a pretext to discriminate against people of color and perhaps even to deport victims of crimes who happen to be illegal immigrants.
Supporters of the new law state that SB-4 has written provisions that prevent any law enforcement agency to inquire about the legal status of any victim, barring crimes related to immigration itself. Some of the extreme left also claim that the anti-sanctuary law will allow law enforcement agencies to detain only on the suspicion of being in the country illegally. SB-4 does not allow this; only those who are lawfully detained can be asked about their legal status; and this is dependent upon the discretion of the law enforcement official.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott Signed The Anti-Sanctuary Bill Into Law on May 7
On May 15, El Paso County Commissioners voted 4-1 to pursue legal action in order to stop the anti-sanctuary law from being implemented. The County ultimately decided to join forces with far-left TOPEF group to accomplish this. El Paso County Judge, Veronica Escobar, admitted to the El Paso Times that, per County policy, none of its officers enforce federal immigration laws. She stated that if the anti-sanctuary law goes into effect that the County would be acting in violation of the law.
