Dear ASS Editors,
Singapore's Circle Line began operations in 2011 and within 5 shorts years experienced multiple breakdowns. Yesterday's breakdown was one of its worst, with affected commuters stranded for more than 2 hours.
Inconvenience aside, the most unacceptable aspect of these breakdowns is LTA and SMRT's utter incompetence in diagnosing the cause of the problem. LTA & SMRT claims that a mysterious signal is interfering with the signally equipment thus causing these major breakdowns. They have no clue where this mystery signal came from and how to resolve the problem.
It is disappointing that Singapore's reputation for efficiency and quality has fallen to such depths. Lee Kuan Yew would definitely turn in his grave at how inept his successor Lee Hsien Loong is at solving the issues Singapore face.
Lee Kuan Yew said during his 1984 National Day rally speech:
"Everything works, whether its water, electricity, gas, telephone, telexes, it just has to work. If it doesn’t work, I want to know why, and if I am not satisfied, and I often was not, the chief goes, and I have to find another chief. Firing the chief is very simple."
Where is this high standards that LKY held his subordinates to? Why is LHL accepting shoddy work done by his Transport Minister and SMRT Chief? It has been 5 years of constant breakdowns and still the end of Singapore's breakdown woes are no where in sight. Singaporeans continue to struggle with the unreliability of the rail system.
If LKY was incharge now, Khaw Boon Wan and Desmond Kuek would have been long fired and replaced with more capable people who knew exactly what they were doing and how to solve Singapore's transport woes once and for all.
It is times like these when you wish LKY was still around to knock some sense into this generation of Singapore leaders.
