It looks like ‘good ol’ boy’ Luke Duke is still getting in trouble with the law. Tom Wopat, the actor who formed part of the cousinly “Dukes of Hazzard” duo known for escaping police in their souped-up Charger, didn’t elude officers in Waltham, Massachusetts last night.

The 1980’s television star was arrested at 10:53 p.m. on charges that include inappropriately grabbing a woman reported to be part of his latest project and cocaine possession. Wopat maintains that he wasn’t meanin’ no harm when he was arraigned this morning on the indecent assault and drug charges.

Wopat is in the Boston area to star in a production of the musical “42nd Street.” The depression-era setting tells the tale of a Broadway show that features a new star. Classic tunes like “Lullaby of Broadway” and “About a Quarter to Nine” make it a memorable play and Wopat was cast in the leading role as Julian March.

The play was scheduled to start with a matinee showing today, but Wopat’s understudy will be filling the role.

The 65-year-old celebrity is an award winning stage actor and recording artist. However, Wopat is best known for his starring role on “Dukes of Hazzard.” The show aired from 1979 to 1985 and was produced before social justice engineering was a depressing way of life. In fact, during those times, society’s racial tension was non-existent compared to today’s sensitive youth.

The hour-long broadcast was an action comedy that featured several outstanding car chases and impossible jumps, along with Duke cousin Daisy wearing short shorts. The duo spent their time solving crime mysteries and avoiding Rosco P. Coltrane, Hazzard County’s inept sheriff, usually by sailing over an obstacle at the last minute in their car, the General Lee.

The sheriff was also the right-hand man of county commissioner, Jefferson Davis “J.D.” Hogg, aka Boss Hogg, and tried to pin every crime on the Duke boys. However, the charges he was arrested for last night don’t seem very far fetched.

Wopat began working on Broadway in the late 1990’s, receiving Tony Award nominations for his work in 1999’s “Annie Get Your Gun” and 2008’s “Catered Affair.”

His recording work is in the contemporary jazz genre. Stephen Holden with the New York Times has said, “Tom Wopat, like Sinatra in his glory days, makes it all look easy and perfectly natural,” about his music.

According to reports, the accusation of indecent assault occurred when Wopat allegedly grabbed a female member of the cast on the buttocks on July 23. Two other claims are also listed on the police report. All are said to have taken place during rehearsals for the “42nd Street” show that is set to open at the Reagale Music Theatre this afternoon.

In one incident, Wopat is accused of pulling a woman into his arms for a hug. The other, he allegedly peeled skin off of the arm of a women who had a sunburn, which was shedding.

Police were looking for Wopat after the indecent assault charge had been filed. Apparently the woman had complained to her supervisors, but nothing happened so she went to the police. Wopat was pulled over by Waltham officers last night after leaving the town’s High School where rehearsals were being conducted.

Wopat has denied the assault allegations. Prosecutors stated that, “During a rehearsal the defendant allegedly walked behind a female cast member, grabbing her buttocks.” Wopat denied the charges of assault saying that he is fond of flirting, but did “nothing that could be considered inappropriate.”

However, during the booking process, officers found what they believed to be drugs in his front pocket, along with a small blue straw. The discovery prompted an immediate search of his Ford Bronco, which yielded more findings.

Two bags of white powder were seized by officers, and Wopat was booked for the indecent assault charge and a misdemeanor charge of cocaine possession.

Wopat has been released after he posted the $1,000 bond.

He explained the presence of the drugs by saying that he purchases cocaine in large amounts to use over time, according to court documents.

Wopat was released on $1,000 bond, but left the courtroom without speaking to reporters. His further appearance in the Boston area play is unknown at this point, but he will probably be back at work tomorrow.
