Lee Hsien Loong Apologises for Public Family Feud, Says He Will Address All Questions at Next Parliament...
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has apologised for the harm done to Singapore’s reputation after his bitter family feud went public.
PM Lee and his younger siblings Dr Lee Wei Ling and Lee Hsien Yang have been attacking each other on Facebook for the past week, over the legacy of their father Lee Kuan Yew.
The feud has started to become a public spectacle which has shocked Singapore.
This, especially after PM Lee’s siblings alleged that he abused his power as prime minister and was trying to milk LKY’s legacy for personal political gain.
They also said that they felt threatened by him and can no longer trust him.
Speaking in a pre-taped video, PM Lee said:
“I deeply regret that this dispute has affected Singapore’s reputation and Singaporeans’ confidence in the government… As your prime minister, I apologise to you for this. And as the eldest of the siblings, it grieves me to think of the anguish that this would have caused our parents if they were still alive.”
The core issue in the Lee family feud is whether to preserve or tear down LKY’s 28 Oxley Road house.
Dr Lee and Lee Hsien Yang say PM Lee is attempting to block the house’s demolition to exploit their father’s legacy, including grooming his own son to be a third-generation leader.
PM Lee has denied all allegations against him.
A ministerial committee is considering what should happen to the property.
PM Lee says he is not involved in any of the committee’s decisions.
He said:
“Much as I would like to move on, and end a most unhappy experience for Singaporeans, these baseless accusations against the government cannot be left unanswered.”
PM Lee said he would address all questions on the matter when parliament sits again on 3 July.
“All MPs will then have the opportunity to raise questions for themselves and their constituents. I have instructed that the PAP party whip be lifted. I urge all MPs, including the non-PAP MPs, to examine the issues thoroughly and question me and my Cabinet colleagues vigorously.”
