Climate change has been one of the most significant disagreements between the DNC and GOP over the last years, to the point where liberals and conservatives’ position on this subject has a direct influence on the growth or decrease in their popularity.

Therefore, it wasn’t a surprise that President Trump promised during the elections that if he ran the White House, he would withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement. Logically, this promise was massively supported, not only because it would represent a major hit to Obama’s legacy, but also because the treaty jeopardized the American economy in an unfair way.

With that in mind, Republican members of the Congress widely supported Trump’s initiative on this issue. Many assumed that, just as with most of the U.S. Presidents, he would not fulfill his promise. However, it seems that Trump has already made his move and will exit the Paris Climate Agreement.

GOP members believed that President Trump would remain with the accord.

This information came from Jonathan Swan, a reporter of Axios media who made a report citing two different sources that confirmed Trump’s decision. Also, the President posted on Twitter that an announcement was coming soon, and stated “I will be announcing my decision on the Paris Accord over the next few days. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Naturally, this action will be strongly criticized by the liberal mainstream media, considering that several world leaders requested that the U.S. remain with the agreement and with its leadership on this issue.

However, it represents a very interesting political move, given the fact that it will reinforce Trump’s position in the Republican Party, which seems quite necessary considering the internal divisions.

In fact, some members that share the same ideas on this issue were highly concerned, since the White House economic advisor Gary Cohn recently told reporters that Trump was evolving on this subject during his trip overseas.

With Trump´s decision, White House senior advisor Stephen K. Bannon achieves a major victory.

It is known that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson supported remaining with the treaty, while Trump’s daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner allegedly channeled support for the agreement behind the scenes, encouraging climate change activists that the president could change his mind on this issue.

Although it was believed that the president would have a weak stance and end up keeping the U.S. in this agreement, the new reality symbolizes a strong message both to the political allies and world leaders. Additionally, it represents a significant victory for the most conservative wing in Trump’s team, with EPA Secretary Scott Pruitt and White House senior advisor Stephen K. Bannon as the visible heads.

Both of them have been characterized for supporting an isolationist position on climate change, and their effort seems to tip the balance in their side. Nevertheless, it is well known that President Trump has supported the idea of exiting the Paris Climate Agreement several times. He has considered that it has some economic consequences that could be quite harmful.

With this move, President Trump will be destroying Obama´s legacy and reinforcing his political position.

What seems to be the main consequence is that if the U.S. remains with the accord, it would give a competitive advantage to powerful economies like India and China. And of course this last nation has become America’s biggest competitor in the last years.

Furthermore, Trump’s intention with this move is not only to have a much more comfortable scenario to compete against China but also to invest the money that the government would spend in the Paris Climate Agreement in depressed sectors. However, analysts suggest that even if Trump doesn’t use the money this way, getting out of the accord would definitely be an economical advantage for his administration.

Also, policy experts assured America that Trump’s legacy won’t be preserved unless he ends up exiting the treaty. As a matter of fact, Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) senior fellows Chris Horner and Marlo Lewis published a paper two months ago where they explained how Barack Obama joined the agreement in 2016 by ignoring the American constitution.

According to this report, the reason why Obama did this was to make his climate policies immune to legal challenges, without the consent of the U.S. Senate. However, Trump’s decision would symbolize the death of a deal that should have never happened because of its legal flaws, according to CEI’s paper.

This way, Obama’s legacy will disappear, Trump reinforces his political strength, and the White House’s most conservative wing achieves a significant victory. But of course, considering Trump’s taste for last minute surprises, it’s expected that something unpredictable could happen on his announcement.

The clock is ticking.
