In part of the propaganda effort to swerve the conversation from explaining overpriced milk powder, PAP MP Rahayu Mahzam today (Ma y 31) called for Singaporean parents to go for cheaper range. Blaming “marketing” and public ignorance, the PAP MP told state media CNA:
“I hope parents are open to new products that were potentially as good as existing ones. Cheaper does not mean not as good. The hope is that parents will have more information on the nutritional needs of their children and can make informed decisions – without being swayed by labels and marketing tactics.”
Singapore currently have the most expensive milk powder in the world with retail prices for the same product three times above Malaysia’s and twice over Australia’s. The Singapore Competition Commission clear the milk powder suppliers of profiteering but is unable to provide the actual reason for the price disparity. The government then set up a committee taskforce, led by Minister Koh Poh Koon, which delivered a statement blaming Singaporeans for choosing the more expensive brands.
Earlier last week, a local company, Einmilk, launched low cost made-in-Singapore milk powder to address the issue. However, the milk powder cans by Einmilk are going for S$39 for a 900g tin – still twice as much as the cheapest range sold in Malaysia and Australia. The Singapore government is also looking at importing more brands to increase competition in a bid to lower prices.
