One of Obama’s agenda items during his tenure was the closure of Guantanamo Bay Detention Center. He made multiple promises to close the controversial prison and although he failed to shut it down completely, he did manage to release or transfer almost 700 detainees.
It is estimated that of that number, 30% have re-engaged in terrorist activities. Is that an acceptable risk? Most would say no.
Six people were detained today in Bordeaux, France. The oldest, 48-year-old Sabir Mahfouz Lahmar, was released by Obama in 2009. Then-French President Nicolas Sarkozy had agreed to take him and the man was sent to Bordeaux upon his release.What happened after is unknown. But eight years later he is part of a group suspected of recruiting for ISIS.
Lahmar was originally arrested in Bosnia in 2001. The Algerian was then part of a group that was thought to be plotting to bomb the U.S. embassy in Sarajevo. It was reported that there was a lack of evidence but still, the man was held for eight years at Guantanamo Bay. That is until Obama released him to France.
As if releasing these terrorists was not enough, Obama lied to the American people, assuring the country that only a “handful” of the released men had returned to terrorism. In 2015 The Weekly Standard reported the truth;
“The president may not know how many Guantanamo detainees have been released but we do. 653. Of which, 196 are either confirmed or suspected recidivists. That is not a handful. That is about 40 handfuls. That’s far more than the president is suggesting. Beyond that, the president said the United States has released only low-level individuals. Again, unequivocally false.”
The Obama administration has pointed out that any of the released who engage in terrorism again are subject to be killed. Since it can take years to find a specific terrorist, this is not exactly reassuring.
Just a few of the released men include:
- Muhammad Salih Husayn al-Shaykh, a man who vowed to kill as many Americans as possible.
- Adham Mohamed Ali Awad: An al-Qaeda member. He made statements that officials found to be “indicating a HIGH probability for recidivist activities including suicide attack against large numbers of both military and civilian population.”
- Samir Naji al-Hasan Muqbil: He served on bin Laden’s personal security detail.
- Fahmi Abdallah Ahmad Ubadi al-Tulaqi: He was a member of al-Qaeda and the Taliban. He also fought in bin Laden’s Arab brigade. He was a member of a Pakistani terror group that planned to build bombs to kill American troops.
These are the people that Obama deemed appropriate for release or transfer. These are the ones, like Lahmar, who have likely returned to their despicable ways and are free to terrorize and kill.
