Illegal immigration is one of the biggest problems plaguing our country. Despite this, when undocumented aliens are arrested by ICE, many on the left tend to push back.

For example, earlier this week, federal immigration agents pulled over and arrested an illegal alien living in New York. Outraged, neighborhood residents worked together to try and prevent the arresting officers from leaving. Unsurprisingly, they ultimately failed.

According to reports, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers associated with the Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) division recently pulled over and arrested Hardat Sampat, an undocumented immigrant from Guyana, a small country in South America. When the agents tried to leave, the alien’s wife, who was in the car with him at the time and knew he was being taken into custody to be deported, protested the arrest by refusing to move her car out of the way.

Concerned locals gathered around to watch what was transpiring, but when they learned that the suspect was likely going to be sent out of the country, they joined the wife in protest. Several residents helped block the street while others confronted the arresting officers, who were trying to persuade the wife to move her car.

One of the protesters recorded the incident on her cell phone and uploaded the video to the internet. The video starts off showing protesters already gathered around the federal agents while the woman holding the camera tries to calm everyone down. “It’s okay. It’s okay. Just let them do what they got to do. It’s okay,” she tells bystanders, adding, “call the lawyer [and] record everything.”

Despite her attempt to calm the situation, several protesters continued to shout at the officers and block the road. One even kneeled in front of them and began praying. Frustrated, the federal agents reached out to the NYPD. When they arrived, the officials quickly regained control of the situation without having to make any additional arrests. The car blocking the road was then moved and Sampat was taken to Manhattan Federal Court for processing.

When asked for additional information about why Sampat was being detained, Rachael Yong Yow, a spokeswoman for ICE, said, “he had previously been released from the custody of the New York Department of Correction with an active detainer in place.” Since he had an active detainer, he should have never been released from custody. The officers were merely doing what should have been done already.

The detainer was initially issued several weeks ago after police arrested Sampat for burglarizing the home of someone he knew on two different occasions. Court papers state that when he allegedly broke in the second time, he vandalized the home by spraying white paint all over the walls, floor, and furniture. Although federal agents told the NYPD to keep him in custody, since New York City is a “sanctuary city,” he was released shortly after being charged. Thankfully, he’s in custody once again.

Although Sampat didn’t physically harm anyone, many other illegals have. To stop potentially dangerous criminals from being released in the future, Congress needs to defund all cities and states that fail to enforce federal immigration law. Since many local governments depend heavily on federal aid, they’ll be forced to comply. If they don’t, the city will suffer financially and the locals will ultimately decide to vote for someone else who will enforce the law.

On top of defunding sanctuary cities, sheriffs and law enforcement officials who refuse to cooperate with federal officials should also be held accountable. In Texas, those who fail to enforce federal law could potentially be thrown in jail. Other states should learn from that and pass similar legislation.

Fortunately, President Donald Trump understands the importance of defunding sanctuary cities. He’s working with Attorney General (AG) Jeff Sessions to crack down on those unwilling to enforce the law. In the past, Sessions has made it very clear that illegal immigration will not be tolerated. Specifically, during a recent television appearance, he stated, “for those that continue to seek improper and illegal entry into this country, be forewarned: This is a new era. This is the Trump era.” He added, “let me be very clear. Don’t come. Please don’t come” noting, “when you are caught, you will be detained, adjudicated and deported…do not come unlawfully. Wait your turn.”

Republicans need to push back against sanctuary cities. Without them, our country would be a much safer place. Until they are defunded, innocent lives are put in danger.
